How focus influences your success

Sujith Kumar, HR AVP, Infosys delivered a motivational speech to the students on “ability to focus” at the Youth Leadership Summit 2022.

Sujith’s speech was centred on what focus was all about. He stated that the fruition of any pursuit depends upon how someone pays attention or concentrates on something. When someone is focused, their attention and energy to complete the task converges, and adds value to the outcome.

Tossing the coin, Sujith also stated in detail, what causes poor attention. He said that sometimes, handling the cause of your inability to focus can help resolve the issue. For instance, he pointed to the lethargic behaviour in adolescents with regard to concentrate on learning. He continued that introspecting such behavioural patterns only would help preventing distractions.

On the other hand, he said that the prime culprit in hijacking attention is smartphone. Beyond phones, video screens seem to be inescapable. They’re in our living rooms (TVs) and on our desktops (computers); they’re in cabs and elevators; they’re in waiting rooms and stores — even on gas station pumps. And they’re in our hands constantly. But if one often experiences poor attention to detail or have difficulty staying engaged in tasks that require full attention due to indulgence in any of the aforesaid aspects, it may be a symptom of an addiction.

Some tips for students to stay focussed:

1. Get rid of distractions

First things first: You need to eliminate distractions. While you can’t do away with everything, you can make an effort to reduce or get rid of as many distractions as possible.

Start with the simple things like:

  • Turning off notifications on your phone or turning your phone off altogether
  • Telling those around you not to distract you for a period of time
  • Closing out of programs or apps that aren’t essential on your computer
  • Playing calming ambient music or white noise

2. Put a lock on social media

If your idea of a break from work is checking Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok every 5 minutes, you certainly have to consider an app that blocks social media. In addition to social media, apps and sites like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, Twitter, text messages, and even email.

Blocking those apps and social media will undoubtedly increase your productivity and efficiency at work.

3. Get enough sleep

It’s no secret that the majority of young people are lacking in getting adequate sleep. While a few nights of minimal sleep are okay, not getting enough sleep most nights of the week can negatively impact both your short and long-term memory, as well as your ability to concentrate.

Above all, Sujith insisted students to follow their passion, as college life is all about identifying the passion than getting a degree, he believed.

Finally, he said that the power of education is unbelievable; to make your life beautiful, try to inspire and make a positive difference in others life.
