Being committed to something or someone is a huge task. Not everyone can be great at it. Commitment needs a lot of hard work and patience. If we are agreeing to something then that needs to be done, no matter what happens. Staying committed says a lot about the person. It shows they are true to their word and will stick to it. When you keep a commitment, you create trust.
There is a beautiful quote by Abraham Lincoln that says, “A commitment is what transforms a promise into reality”. It takes a lot to keep up a promise but that makes all the needed difference to help you stand out from the crowd.
There are lots of places we can show our commitment and that would go on to be a total game changer.
Be committed to your people
- Family and close friends make sure to keep your word. If you have promised them that you would be with them in their times of need, emergencies or even a small promise that you made to your children that you will turn up to their school events, please make sure you stick to it. This act shows your commitment and also helps them to know you are concerned about them. When you show up to their activities and are concerned about their interests, they will know you are invested in them and they will show more progress in their everyday work. Showing up like how you promised, matters!
- People at work are those who we spend a major part of our day with. When we commit to finishing our part of work, make sure we stick to it without any excuses because If we had committed that we would do our part. If we have committed to supporting them in their work, we need to stand by our word. Be it small or big, keeping the promise is really important. That too in a professional environment, where team work plays a major role, standing up to our commitment and being there for our team in huge. It will earn us respect among our peers and we will be known as the person of our word. If it is difficult or we face last minute hiccups, make sure to keep up the word. Our part of work matters for the team, be it individual contribution or working along with the team, make it a goal to stay true to your promise.
- People we meet along the way are the most interesting ones. We do not have any need to be committed to them. We meet all kinds of people everyday either during our commute or in market places or hospital visits. We sure are not going to meet them again on a regular basis but creating an impact there shows who we really are. Those everyday tasks shows, we travel to work everyday at the same time showing we are committed to work that we show up everyday, going to the market place or hospital visits shows we are committed to our family to do these without any excuse. We walk by example showing we stand for what we committed.
Be committed to your health
If you have made a decision to stay healthy and fit, make sure to stick to that decision. In the beginning it obviously is going to be difficult to follow the rules towards healthy eating and doing exercises but stick to your commitment anyway. You are being watched by your family, esp. your children and people around you. Showing up everyday to follow a healthy routine shows your commitment even when you are not obliged to do as it was your personal decision. Making sure you follow your personal goal gives you satisfaction that you are accomplishing something on your own interest. Furthermore, your children will see how committed you are to your goals and it gives them the urge to do it themselves in whatever they intend to do.
Be committed to your society
- Be an honourable person by taking care of the place where you live. Be it the community you are in or the locality you grew up or even the place where you studied, be committed to it. Try giving back. The place you studied gave you a future, the community you lived in brought you up. It could be really small but show your commitment to bring in a positive change. It will encourage others to do something and give back to society. Be the change by being committed to doing good. Nobody is forcing you but its your personal effort to do something positive to the society around you, that itself shows your level of commitment you have towards things that might not be noted by everyone.
There is a saying that goes like this, “Commitment is the foundation of great Accomplishments”. If you are committed to something, it doesn't matter if it is big or small, make sure to honour your word. Stick to it, lead by example, make it your trademark that you are always committed to what you want to do, I am sure success will follow.
