PS: Not the best-selling novel
The concept of pride in one’s life can be tricky. It’s human nature to feel a sense of pride in our achievements or possessions, and that’s understandable. We all take pride in ourselves when we top a test or win a sport or when we learn a new skill.
We also take pride in the caste that we are born into, the expensive possessions that we have, and also when kids obey and adhere to every single thing their parents say. That’s when it turns out to be a double-edged sword! Don’t get it wrong; I’m not here to advise the upcoming generation to go against their parents will. It’s just that one should not feel any pressure in circumscribing to the path that someone has laid out for them. Sure, it is laid out to them in their best interest, but isn’t it up to the individual to decide if it is the best thing for them? And how can this instil a sense of pride in someone?
Let’s not even get started on the pride that people seek from the caste they are born into! Since when are we born into a “caste”? Aren’t we all born in this world? Doesn’t it diverge our options and open multiple realms when we look at it that way? The sky is literally the limit!
Our generation has normalized flaunting anything and everything. That is okay as long as one can flex having an Android as much as one can flex having an iOS! As long as we flex going to eat street food as much as we flex having a meal in a 5-star hotel, we are okay!
This society has inflicted a lot of preconceived thoughts and opinions on us, and let’s be honest, it is difficult to combat that. Even when we want to come out of this vicious circle, it isn’t easy, as at some point in time our thoughts have been influenced by those. Let’s start valuing people by their deeds and not by their possessions. Let us start taking pride in the efforts and hard work one does, the empathy we show towards others, the intention of making the people around us grow with us, and also educating the people who are unaware, rather than taking pride in being a know it all. It’s time we start practicing the values that remained as mere textbook material until now!
